Sober living in New York is possible but for those who are newly facing the challenges of recovery, it can be a difficult battle to win. In 2007, eight sober home operators established the nonprofit Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing. In 2011, the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR) established national standards for recovery residences (including sober housing). These standards were developed using a collaborative approach with input from regional and national recovery housing organizations. We expect our residents to be actively involved in an individual recovery plan. We facilitate in- house AA and NA meetings, and all residents are subject to supervised drug and alcohol testing. Transition (e.g. entry, phase movement and exit) rituals promote residents’ sense of belonging and confer progressive status and increasing opportunities within the recovery living environment and community. Statistics show that most New York residents aged who do need treatment for some type of chemical dependency such as alcoholism or heroin addiction are not getting adequate care. For those who do find help, they often face a new challenge when they exit treatment and make the honest attempt to live a sober and clean lifestyle on their own.
